Heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Rudy Juan for inviting me to the relaunching of the Senator Josรฉ Emeterio Muรฑoz Romero, Sr. Memorabilia at the third floor of the Silliman University Library System complex.



On August 25, 2026, the Silliman University Library proudly relaunched the Ambassador Josรฉ E. Romero, Sr. Memorabilia collection, honoring the life, contributions, and enduring legacy of one of Silliman University’s most distinguished alumni. The collection preserves precious historical artifacts and stories, offering the Silliman community an intimate glimpse into his remarkable life of public service.



Born in Bais, Negros Oriental, Senator Romero was the son of Francisco Romero, Sr. (former mayor of Tanjay and provincial board member) and Josefa Calumpang Muรฑoz. Over his storied career, he served the nation in several monumental capacities:

  • Senator-Elect & Legislator: Served as a Senator-elect of the First Congress of the Philippines (1946). Prior to this, he represented the 2nd District of Negros Oriental in both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, serving as Majority Floor Leader from 1934 to 1938.
  • Diplomatic Pioneer: Appointed by President Elpidio Quirino as the first official Philippine Ambassador to the Court of St. James's (United Kingdom), serving from 1949 to 1953.
  • Cabinet Minister: Served as the Secretary of Education from 1959 to 1962 under Presidents Carlos P. Garcia and Diosdado Macapagal. Concurrently, he chaired the Board of Regents of the University of the Philippines and the Josรฉ Rizal National Centennial Commission.

The family was meaningfully represented at the gathering by Negros Oriental Historian and grandson from the Villanueva clan, Prof. Penn T. Larena, along with Dr. Jutz DC Pamate and Negros writer Gemma Minda Laxina Iso.

  Eddie Sinco Romero, a national artist for film and broadcast arts, celebrated his 100th birthday on behalf of the people of Dumaguete and the Province of  Negros Oriental . The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Foundation University, Silliman University Culture and Arts Council,National Museum of the Philippines Dumaguete and the City Government of Dumaguete collaborated to arrange the event, which honored Romero's significant contributions to Philippine cinema. DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental — To marks a significant milestone as the Capitol of Negros Oriental celebrates its 100th anniversary. This historic building, standing as a testament to the province's rich political, cultural, and socio-economic heritage, was honored with a historical marker from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). The event is led by NHCP Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, LGU Mayors and the entire Provincial Government of Negros Oriental.   The Capitol's story begins with its original structure near the shore, which was tragically destroyed by fire in 1922. The provincial government then relocated the Capital to its current site, where construction of the new building began in 1924.
