Birth Centennial of Eddie Sinco Romero : A cultural Hero

  Eddie Sinco Romero, a national artist for film and broadcast arts, celebrated his 100th birthday on behalf of the people of Dumaguete and the Province of  Negros Oriental . The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Foundation University, Silliman University Culture and Arts Council,National Museum of the Philippines Dumaguete and the City Government of Dumaguete collaborated to arrange the event, which honored Romero's significant contributions to Philippine cinema. Eddie Romero, who was conferred the Order of National Artists for Film and Broadcast Arts, the highest recognition bestowed upon Filipino individuals for their exceptional contributions to Philippine Arts as a Cultural Hero .  Silliman University (SU) held its 9th Floral Offering Ceremony on August 9, 2024, in honor of Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and Mrs. Laura Hibbard, the couple who founded Silliman Institute in 1901. The event, organized by the SU Elementary School of the College of Education, was a significant part of the annual Founders Day celebration and took place at the statue of Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard in front of Hibbard Hall. Dr. Margaret Helen Udarbe-Alvarez, SU Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, led the ceremony alongside department heads, the dean, faculty, staff, students, student leaders, student organizations, and alumni. The floral offering underscored the University’s deep gratitude and appreciation for the Hibbards' unwavering dedication and profound impact in the fields of education and community service.   The Negros Oriental Area stood tall as it hosted this year's Central Visayas Regional Assembly, welcoming chapters from Cebu, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental to Dumaguete City on June 1. The day began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Dumaguete Quezon Park, setting a solemn tone for the proceedings to follow at Bethel Guest House.                      Negros Oriental Area with Supreme Council  The assembly was filled with inspiring speeches, informative lectures, and solemn ceremonies, as members of the region gathered to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal. The highlight of the event was the conferment ceremony, where some members received the prestigious KGOR and KGCR ranks in a ceremony officiated by the Supreme Council.   The new Regional, Deputy Regional, and Area Commanders of Central Visayas took their oath of office in the presence of Supreme Commander Sir Raymundo A. del Rosario, KGCR, marking a new chapter in the Knights of Rizal organization.

DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental — To marks a significant milestone as the Capitol of Negros Oriental celebrates its 100th anniversary. This historic building, standing as a testament to the province's rich political, cultural, and socio-economic heritage, was honored with a historical marker from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). The event is led by NHCP Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, LGU Mayors and the entire Provincial Government of Negros Oriental.   The Capitol's story begins with its original structure near the shore, which was tragically destroyed by fire in 1922. The provincial government then relocated the Capital to its current site, where construction of the new building began in 1924.
