Budbud Kabog has a storied past dating back to World War II when guerilla soldiers in the mountains of Valencia rediscovered it as a vital food source. Post-war, soldiers' wives began crafting Budbud Kabog as pasalubong during festive seasons, leading to its popularization in local markets. The dish gained further recognition at the First  Buglasan Festival at Foundation University and continues to be a highlight at LGU Dumaguete booth openings during the festival.
