Negros Oriental Marks 125 Years of Liberation: A Commemoration of Heroes and Freedom

 

 Dumaguete City, November 24, 2023 — The Negros Island History, Heritage & Arts Society, in collaboration with the City Government of Dumaguete,Provincial Government of Negros Oriental , the Paulinian Art Society, and the Buglas Reading & Writers Club, joined hands to commemorate the 125th Negros Oriental Liberation Day. This significant event aimed to pay tribute to the Negrosanon heroes who played pivotal roles in the Negros Revolution against Spanish Rule.

 The commemoration took place at the De la Vina Monument in Manuel Quezon Park, Dumaguete City, starting at 8:00 o’clock in the morning. A symbolic testament to the struggles and triumphs of the past, served as the backdrop for a solemn floral offering and a short program that resonated with historical significance.

 

Noteworthy attendees included representatives from various organizations such as the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, Girl Scouts of the Philippines, Order of the Knights of Rizal, Freemasons from Mt. Kaladias Lodge No. 91, Eagles Club, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, Provincial Government of Negros Oriental, PIO Negros Oriental, as well as students from ST. Paul University Dumaguete, Foundation University, Dumaguete City National High School, and Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria.

The event was a grand display of unity, bringing together individuals and groups from different sectors of society, all sharing a common goal — to remember and honor the heroes who paved the way for the freedom  of Negros Oriental that we  enjoys today.

 

The keynote guest speaker for the occasion was the distinguished Gov. Chaco Longa-Sagarbarria, whose inspiring address resonated with the crowd. Governor Sagarbarria eloquently emphasized the historical significance of the day, recognizing the enduring spirit of freedom that unites the people of Negros Oriental.

In his speech, Gov. Sagarbarria highlighted the sacrifices made by the heroes of the past and called upon the present generation to reflect on their legacy. He urged the community to continue building on the foundations of unity, strength, and progress that were laid by those who fought for the liberation of Negros Oriental.

 

The commemorative event was not merely a reflection on history but also a celebration of resilience and the continuous pursuit of a better future. The floral offering, a symbol of gratitude and remembrance, served as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by Negrosanons in their quest for freedom.
