Commemoration of the 123rd Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal 2019 in Dumaguete City


The Dumaguete City Government and the Order of the Knights of Rizal Negros Oriental Chapter commemorated the 123rd death anniversary of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.

The Dec. 30 commemoration, themed “Jose Rizal: Huwaran ng Pilipino sa Ikadalawampu’t Siglo”, was held at Quezon Park in Dumaguete City.

Newly-assumed Associate Justice Edgardo Delos Santos was guest speaker in the commemorative program.

The local celebration was held in partnership with the Division of Dumaguete City of the Department of Education and the 11th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. 

Justice Delos Santos, in his speech, lamented what he called as the irony of the present times.

He said nothing much has changed today since Rizal’s time more than a century ago.

We still live under an elected oligarchy, which means the rule by a few and not by the majority, he further said.

He served as a Municipal Trial Court judge in Dumaguete and later became a Regional Trial Court judge in Bacolod City before he was named Court of Appeals Justice in Cebu City for more than 11 years.
  


He was appointed by President Duterte to replace SC Justice Antonio Carpio.
Leading officials in the celebration were Gov. Roel Degamo, Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, Vice Mayor Alan Gel Cordova, Councilors Edgar Lentorio Jr., Michael Bandal, Joe Kenneth Arbas, Nelson Patrimonio and ABC President Dionnie Amores.

Other government agencies represented in the ceremony included the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police, BJMP, Fire Department, Liga ng Mga Barangay and City Tourism Office.

Charles Ezra Anthony Tuozo, KCR, Knights of Rizal Chapter commander, Penn Larena, KOR deputy Chapter Commander and Chapter Chancellor Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr. led the knights in the rites which include a wreath-laying on the newly-restored statue of the national hero.

Also present were the members of the Free and Accepted Mason of the Philippines-Mount Kaladias Lodge 91, the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, Rizal Youth Club, Philippine National Red Cross, Army Reserve, Senior Citizen Association, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Veterans Federation of the Philippines Sons and Daughters Association Inc., Dumaguete Lions Club, Foundation University, Silliman University and Saint Paul University Dumaguete.




Order of the Knight of Rizal reorganization of the Dumaguete Chapter is now open for the application of new members. QUALIFICATIONS: Male of legal age Filipino or Foreigner (18 years old and above); Good moral character and reputation (has not been convicted of any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude); Believes in Rizal, and Willing to learn more about Rizal and follow his teachings.
