Bais City, Philippines - The Central Azucarera de Bais, the largest producer of raw sugar in the province of Negros Oriental, is celebrating its 99th anniversary this year.
The Central Azucarera de Bais, the largest producer of raw sugar in the province of Negros Oriental, is celebrating its 99th anniversary this year.
Established by the Tabacalera businessmen from Spain in 1918, the Central Azucarera de Bais is the pioneer in the sugar industry in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia. This industry reached its peak in the 1930’s bringing the biggest influence to the Negrenses culture and tradition in the province. Bais City credits much of its progress to the sugar mill.
Nearby is the Casa Grande, an equally old residential compound surrounded by old acacia trees, one of the historic manors where President Manuel L Quezon, en route to Australia, once stayed with his cabinet. The two storey wooden houses are greatly influenced by old Spanish design and architecture. Much of the houses have undergone restoration and continue to be used as homes of top management.
In celebration of the 99th anniversary of Central Azucarera de Bais, its president and CEO, Mr Steven Chan hosted a thanksgiving party where the Spanish community and old families of Bais and Tanjay enjoyed dinner, music, dance and old fun memories in the famous Casa Grande. (FREEMAN)
